Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. -Matthew 11:28

Rest and inactivity are not the same things. You can sit on a sofa for an entire day and still be the most restless person on the planet. That’s because rest, true rest, the kind of rest that Jesus is promising here, is something that can only be experienced by being in right relationship with God.

That’s the painful lesson that the nation of Israel learned as they made their way through the wilderness. God had given them a very specific command to not work on the Sabbath Day. With this mandated day of rest, you might think the Israelites would have been a well-rested people. But there was a problem. Their rest was physical, not spiritual.

Spiritually, they were an exhausted people. God had given them 613 laws that they were required to keep to stay in right standing with Him. This was in impossible standard to keep, so despite their efforts, they were never able to live up to the Law. Consequently, they restlessly lived in relational disrepair before God.

Jesus changed this. He came to fulfill the Law and bring about a new standard for man to keep-one that man could live up to. Now all a person needs to do in order to be right with God and find true rest is to look to Jesus and trust in Him.

This simple act of faith brings about a righteousness that no amount of Law-keeping ever could. And with this righteousness comes a spiritual rest that is unlike any amount of physical rest.

Are you tired?

Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29
