From My Bible Reading Today: Having “Fashion-sense” Is Okay Unless It’s All About “You” And Not About Jesus

Matthew 6:27-34 (MSG) 27-29 “Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.

30-33 “If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

34 “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

Now let me preface what I’m about to say before I get accosted by women in the halls of the church who love to parade the latest fashion please understand that what I’m trying to get out from what God showed me in my Bible reading today is not a condemnation but a point of reasoning that comes from Jesus Himself on avoiding the pride that much too often seeps into the church through “fashion” under the pretense of being “righteous for God”…this is what I’m speaking about today (the sisters can be vicious if you mess with their hair, nails, clothes, and especially SHOES! LOL!!)

Seriously though, what Jesus is teaching us in the scripture references above is just as with anything that takes attention away from Him “fashion” when it is pointing out more of “your” glory, “your” style, “your” way of living, and “your” level or “non-level” of wealth (playing poorer or using your “poorness” “your “Godliness”) instead of utilizing it to draw others to or closer to the only thing that is ever worth anything….JESUS!

We see in the “church” all of the time people who are treated less than the child of God that they are just because of “fashion” when they don’t have or can’t afford what would be considered as decent clothes according to today’s standard.

What’s worse even among people who are of the same financial setting if you don’t keep up with the latest fashions, the latest style, the latest shoes, or the latest hairstyle then there is often un-necessary pressure applied between the brothers/sisters to submit to some “fashion god” and wasting time on these things rather than being fully concerned for the things that Jesus is concerned for.

Again, this is not a condemning statement because I myself like to dress “nice” (my wife wishes I would dress “nice” more often) but there was a time in my life that if I didn’t have the right clothes on and the right shoes to match them that I considered the day a complete and epic “fail” and this is the vein of what I feel that Jesus is trying to use me to get across today.

Simply put…there are too many of us that are trying to impress ourselves, trying to impress others (both inside and outside of the church), or trying to make ourselves feel better by dressing up to cover insecurities or other issues behind a “mask of fashion” which in reality is harmful because in doing this we often are foolishly attempting to hide them from God and are building up a type of “negative” pride in our hearts that kills the soul just as any pride does.

It does no good to have the latest fashion on if your intent is to draw attention to yourself when as a “Christian” our lives, our bodies, our actions, our talk, and yes even our fashion as well as our entire lives should eventually be utilized to draw attention to Jesus.

The devil has craftily used fashion just as He has done with music and every other social aspect to develop pride into members of the “Body’s” hearts and when it becomes so integral as to how a person serves it puts the attention off of Jesus and onto the individual causing people to be misled into believing that what one wear’s is truly important when in truth it is the heart that matters.

We can, however, utilize fashion to benefit what we do in service to Christ and I love it when I see these things happen within the “Body”.

For instance, at our church we’ve had women who were searching for a way to serve but kept coming up empty come up with teaching girls how to dress on a budget so that they can learn to shop more frugally.

There have been times when I’ve witnessed throughout many church’s girls and women utilizing the art of painting their “nails” as a way for a (ummm!!!!) previous generation to bond with a current generation (whew! Hope I’m off the hook didn’t have to use age!) which resulted in women and girls who would normally not have much in common to bond to the point that it opened up avenues of communication that would have never been opened otherwise resulting in a free flow of communication that further strengthened the body of Christ.

We’ve had sessions were our women have been taught the art of dressing with style (thank you dear Pastor Leisa and others) while also being taught how to protect our men’s “eye gate’s” by toning down the accentuation of the body thus helping the one’s that struggle with “sexual” issues not to stumble.

We’ve had men’s meetings that teach our guys how to navigate through and deal with the struggle’s of having to adjust to today’s “style” so that they can not only lead our young men within the church to do so but to also take these tools out into the marketplace and the rest of society to help men who struggle with these issues that can take attention away from God.

There are so many more examples of church’s utilizing programs that utilize today’s fashion mindset to draw people in to knowing more about or getting closer than Jesus and I’m sure that many that are reading this can think of hundreds if not thousands of more examples of this and it is a beautiful thing when we can take what the devil means to destroy us with and utilize it to save souls, change hearts, change minds, and change attitudes.

So be encouraged today my brothers and sisters to realize that dressing well is not an issue as long as you ensure that your “hot” outward appearance is not a cover-up for a “cold” heart that is lacking in Christ and if it is don’t be down about it just take it to Christ, lay it on His altar, and ask Him how to use your blessing of having nice things for His Kingdom as you minister to others.

God doesn’t mind us being the best that we can be or dressing the best that we can until it starts being a focal point to draw the attention that only He truly deserves away from Him and to ourselves.

Let’s pray!

Father, we thank You for being blessed enough to wear nice clothes but we pray that You look deep into our hearts for issues of pride dealing with fashion and further we pray that You deal with the hearts of those that covet the “nice things” that others have which is also wrong in your eyes though it is taught as a “right thing” or “only fair” in our society to day.
We pray that every brother or sister that utilizes fashion to cover up issues of insecurity or whatever it is in their souls that allows them to focus on themselves more than You have your perfect light shined into that area of darkness so that they may utilize their “fashion” sense to bring glory to Your Kingdom as you intended the blessing to be in the first place.

I pray for the church as a whole to be less “fashion-minded” and more “Jesus-minded” so that we can stop looking like “money-grubbing buffoons” and more like the “Jesus” people that we need to be so that we can change hearts, change minds, change destinies, and lead those that are dead to life into your salvation which is our true mission.

I pray for the ones that you just put on my heart that is now offended with Your “vessel” that wrote this for You because they are those that You are speaking to because it is not about the clothes or the fashion but you want them to understand that when they look in the mirror it’s about their heart and whether or not what beats inside of it is more about You or more about them when they serve You.

Lastly I pray that anyone that is reading this that does not know that You love them and that You specifically died a horrible, gruesome death just so that they may not die and live blissfully and eternally by Your side repent of their sins, ask You for forgiveness for them, asks You into their heart, and claim you as Lord and Savior for “Oh” how that makes You as Your servant “Phil” from Duck Dynasty says “Happy! Happy! Happy!)

We love You, we honor You, we praise You, and we d so just because we love You and want to bring You the glory that You deserve sweet Jesus!

It is in Your Holy Name we pray,

Amen!

By the hand of Your servant,

Ron “Big Black” Garrett
