A Response To The News I Received Today Of One Of My Former Inner-City Youth Being Charged With Robbery And Murder (Choices Matter)

(Pastors Scott and Britt Silcox told me when I started in they youth ministry that it would be most rewarding and most difficult and no matter the cost I/we must be determined to continue to allow Jesus to use us to reach His youth)

I must admit that I am a little ticked and sad yet still thanking and praising God through it this morning because of some disturbing news that my wife sent me today.

One of the girls (I won’t use her name) that used to come to our youth group when I was in bus ministry (and I think one other one that came intermittedly) was arrested for a robbery that ended in the murder of a man and now sits in jail awaiting to find out her fate as a consequence for her making negative choices.

As I thought of her I remembered back to when I used to talk to the kids on the bus ride into church about first giving their lives to Christ, then to change the people who surrounded them, and to not put themselves into situations where they could do down the wrong road yet this young lady and the others that she were with chose to do the opposite of what God was trying to tell her through me and the others that God put in front of her/them in their lives.

This news hit me a little hard because this young lady was one of my favorite kids in the inner-city youth ministry that I worked in because she was one of those bright, young people who had so much potential (and still has…we won’t give up on her/them), she was so feisty/determined to create a better life than she had, and  because she really was trying to break the generational curses that beset her and her family.  She also had a great desire to change her circumstance and wanted a better life but sadly she still made choices that one after the other took her down the road that led to a destination that led to a robbery and a man’s death.

Young people (and us…ummm…more mature ones also), please listen to me…

It matters whether or not you choose to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior or not…in choosing Him you will certainly live and live life abundantly but in rejecting Him you will most certainly die the death of all deaths which is an eternal one along with satan who wants to bring as many people down with him to live in hell forever.

It matter’s whether or not you choose to read your Bible and develop a close, meaningful relationship with Jesus every day because doing so can help keep you grounded in the Lord and not doing so gives the enemy ample opportunity to fill a seeking mind with the world’s knowledge which will instead of producing life will produce certain death.

It matters whether or not you are spend quiet time with Jesus while shutting out the “noise” of this often evil world for part or parts of your everyday life because if you do spend time with Him you will find peace but when you eschew quiet time with Him chaos always reigns.

The choices that you make or fail to make WILL affect you here on earth but praise God this young lady still has God’s breath of life in her lungs and she still has the chance to rededicate her life to Christ, ask for forgiveness for her sins, repent of them, and God in His infinite mercy and grace is faithful to do what His word says and wash her sins away with His blood until they are as “white as snow”.

This does not, however, mean that she will not and should not suffer consequences for her actions and this is a stark reminder to everyone that choices do matter and they can have grave and even eternal consequences if we are not careful to choose God, His ways, and His gift of a reborn life over the devil, his ways, and (if we follow him) his certain path to death.

Let’s pray,

Father God, we  pray that we all keep Jesus in mind in all that we do today…especially in the choices that we make by capturing “every thought unto Christ” and viewing our actions through the prism of Jesus’ eyes instead of our own flawed ones.  We pray for peace for the young lady, her cohorts, their families, the victim’s family, the people who witnessed the incident, and for all that have been affected by this tragic news.  We pray that this young lady and her cohorts have an intimate encounter with the Lord Jesus so that this incident however tragic can eventually bring God (and it will) glory.  Lastly, we pray that all people, especially our youth remain mindful that it does indeed matter what environment or atmosphere we allow ourselves to be encapsulated within.  We pray that we all encapsulate ourselves within a Jesus-filled atmosphere that continually changes us from glory to glory into the beautiful image of You dear Jesus!

It is in your Holy Name our Lord that we pray!

Amen!

By the hand of your eternal servant and bond-slave,

Ron “Big Black” Garrett
