We “Win” By Preparing As If We Indeed Desire To Win

2 Timothy 2-15: 15 Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.

Hebrews 12: 1-3: 1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

“I think you win games in February, March, April, June, July, summer conditioning program, winter conditioning program, spring practice,” Saban said. “Because this is when guys learn how to push through the season. You develop the psychological endurance that you need so that you can endure the season.

Coach Nick Saban

One of the reasons that I love sports is because almost all forms of completive sports teaches you about and prepares you for so many of the situations that we will face during our lifetime.

This aforementioned quote (and many other great quotes by coaches like him) by Coach Nick Saban though spoken in reference to football can easily be utilized by the follower of Christ in how they should approach their walk with Lord Jesus.

We “win games (battles)” when we prepare for them by reading, memorizing, and meditating on God’s word; by applying the principles found in God’s word to our daily lives; by practicing the principles of patience and “non-worry” mentality that Jesus modeled for us when He roamed the earth; by being honest about our issues be they ones of sin, relationships, pride, or character; by us NOT forsaking our assemblance with our brothers and sisters in God’s family (meaning…get your butt into church), and by practicing obedience to God’s Holy Spirit and being honest with ourselves (and Him) when we aren’t obedient or miss the mark (all the while realizing that even when we do “miss the mark” that He still loves us and is proud of us..His child).

All of this plus asking for (and receiving in our heart) God’s forgiveness as we repent of any un-Godly behavior so that He can transform us to be more like His image than our image along with realizing that the lives that we live is a marathon race and not a sprint race will prepare us as believer’s in Christ to “push through the season” (of our entire lifespan on this earth) and in the end we will “develop the psychological endurance” that we need to endure the entire “season” of our lifetime much like Coach Saban spoke of in this quote about the game of football.

We are in a family (God’s family) which is in itself a team led by Jesus Himself and our ultimate goal is to win souls for the Kingdom by spreading the “Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” so that all may have a chance to know salvation yet much like a team of football players or any other athletes playing any other sport we must “practice” as if we desire to win the game.

Coach Saban is a great coach but we have the ultimate coach and team leader in Jesus who through His unmerited grace and mercy grants us salvation which we could never earn by doing “works” but our “works” show our commitment to the team and provides us a vehicle to provide those that we are trying to help win into the Kingdom a prism view into the heart of our eternal Father and though I can never “practice” enough to become “perfect” (only Christ is), I can do all that I can to prepare for the tasks assigned to me by “studying to show” myself “approved” and do anything and everything that I can in obedience to Christ to “win”, “win”, “win” in this game called “life’.

He loves you today!

Though we play “the game” we must always remember that we have already won it because Jesus made the ultimate and only play that could ever win it (the game) when He lowered Himself to His footstool (earth), took off His Heavenly robe, put on a robe of human flesh, and died a horrible, gruesome death on a “tree” as a ransom sacrifice so that we could be reconciled with God through His most generous, self-less act of eternal kindness and love.

Pray to Him today and ask Him to help you develop a more consistent study life in His word, pray to Him that He will help you develop a more consistent schedule of spending quiet time with Him, pray to Him so that He can help you recognize and face the fears that the enemy taunts you with to try and keep you from fulfilling your destiny, allow yourself to be led by the Holy Spirit so that you will stop being distracted by the people and “life events” that stifles your growth in Christ Jesus, and pray to Him asking Him to shine His marvelous light into every area of your heart to expose any darkness that is hidden in it so that you can not only be healed but be brought to the point that you can realize your full potential in Him for all of the world to see.

I leave you with an eternal kiss from a brother who loves you and it is my pleasure to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ alongside you!

Your brother-in-Christ and God’s eternal servant,

Ron “Big Black” Garrett
