“Welfare”…the government can never replace God or the Church

2 ‬ ‭Thessalonians 3:1-13‬ ‭MSG‬‬:  “One more thing, friends: Pray for us. Pray that the Master’s Word will simply take off and race through the country to a groundswell of response, just as it did among you. And pray that we’ll be rescued from these scoundrels who are trying to do us in. I’m finding that not all “believers” are believers. But the Master never lets us down. He’ll stick by you and protect you from evil.
Because of the Master, we have great confidence in you. We know you’re doing everything we told you and will continue doing it. May the Master take you by the hand and lead you along the path of God’s love and Christ’s endurance.
Our orders—backed up by the Master, Jesus—are to refuse to have anything to do with those among you who are lazy and refuse to work the way we taught you. Don’t permit them to freeload on the rest. We showed you how to pull your weight when we were with you, so get on with it. We didn’t sit around on our hands expecting others to take care of us. In fact, we worked our fingers to the bone, up half the night moonlighting so you wouldn’t be burdened with taking care of us. And it wasn’t because we didn’t have a right to your support; we did. We simply wanted to provide an example of diligence, hoping it would prove contagious.
Don’t you remember the rule we had when we lived with you? “If you don’t work, you don’t eat.” And now we’re getting reports that a bunch of lazy good-for-nothings are taking advantage of you. This must not be tolerated. We command them to get to work immediately—no excuses, no arguments—and earn their own keep. Friends, don’t slack off in doing your duty.”

‭‭
I’ve always known that “welfare” the way “man” administers it is a flawed perversion of God’s perfect example of how to deal with the poor.
Welfare in this country started out with good intentions and WAS an extension OF the church’s heart given to its people by God (people forget that the church used to work hand in hand with the government to help people) to help people through even our government that “we the people” elected.
As normal though and as “we the people” moved further and further away from God men/women perverted this “help” from something that was meant to be “good” into a political tool to accrue power for themselves and/or their particular political party’s (BOTH sides are guilty of this by the way).
As I read the scriptures above this morning God brought me to remembrance of how I felt as a child growing up in welfare and how I knew that many of the people administering the program didn’t care about me/us (my family) didn’t truly care about us (there were many workers in the program that did truly care) but that we were simply numbers in a game of political money and no “love” was administered along with the assistance that we were provided.
But as I read those scriptures God showed me what true welfare is and that it comes from a heart that is centered on Jesus and through people that are willing to be used by Jesus to help people and NOT to simply get an EBT card for food stamps or to receive a paycheck but as a vehicle or avenue for them to be exposed to the gospel THROUGH receiving said assistance and thus receive “living food” and “living water” (perfect assistance) that will never run dry no matter their situation.
When welfare was first administered it was a cooperation between church and government as churches often received money to assist the poor but once politicians got into office who hated God and knew that this assistance helped to spread the name and way of Jesus they, over the years reduced the churches influence in government based on the lie of the “separation of church and state” (which is another topic for another day).
AND it was “we the people” who allowed it to happen through our vote just as we allow evil to happen in our government and in our land through our vote today.
Lastly, we should most certainly help the poor as it is most certainly God’s command and our duty as citizens of Heaven.
However, we must also heed the warning from our brother the Apostle Paul on how to deal with the “lazy” (those who won’t “work”) on this issue as noted in these scriptures
I’m not talking about the people who truly need help. I’m talking about the people who sit on their “rump” and do nothing when they are fully capable of working and providing for themselves.
These Scriptures clearly tell us how to handle them and I pray that as you read them that we as a community pray and ask God to embolden us all as brothers and sisters to (in love) help people without leading them to a life of dependency on the federal government who then quite often becomes the false god in their lives that they depend on for sustenance instead of the One and only TRUE God who gives them “meat” and “drink” that would help them live forever.
